Throughout the Spring and Summer of 2007 young people from the Priors Estate in Bury St Edmunds worked on the Beaumont Close garden project. The garden was created from a derelict piece of land as part of a project led by West Suffolk’s Crime & Disorder Partnership and Havebury Housing Partnership along with Havebury’s grounds maintenance contractors Norfolk County Services (NCS).

Initially a design competition was held, which was won by 14 year old Ashley Bird. He assisted with the work throughout and in August he officially opened it along with the local Mayor. The youngsters worked on the project during the school holidays and they were supported by Havebury’s Neighbourhood Ranger team, staff from NCS and parents. The youngsters received payment in the form of shopping vouchers for each session they attended.

Not only was this a successful example of partnership working with residents and local agencies, the quality of the work was also recognised when the garden received high praise from Anglia in Bloom judges. It was singled out as one of the four areas that helped Bury to win the gold standard in the Permanent Planting category of 2007’s Anglia in Bloom competition.
