Dear London Ambassadors

On 27 July it will be two years until the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games. On that day the Mayor of London will launch a volunteer scheme inviting Londoners to become part of the capital's visitor welcome during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Mayor has decided to call this scheme the “London Ambassador” scheme. This obviously impacts on the promotion of the London Ambassador training that you have been through in your current role, however, this does not mean that the London Ambassador role that you carry out will end. Your role will still be promoted to visitors and the London Development Agency (LDA) is currently looking at how to improve your scheme for the Games, and especially their communications with those that have been through the training. The LDA will also be re-launching the scheme later in the year, possibly under a different name.

The role that you carry out as a London Ambassador is still a key part of the welcome plans for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. As you know, uniformed staff attract queries from visitors and Londoners, and good quality information and a welcoming approach will be even more important at Games time.

We will continue to keep you updated on the development of these plans but I thought it was important to let you know about the Mayor's launch next Tuesday to avoid any confusion. Many thanks for your time and dedication.

A 23 year-old man has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment for firearms offences on 3 September after a successful investigation by police in Islington.
